Iron, butter & mountains

Bohinj


Admire the heritage of Gorenjska region. In Kropa,  an old smelting and iron forging settlement, a place of old iron foundaries and wrought iron, visit The Iron Forging Museum. After that the path  lead you to the Alpine region, along famous lake Bled to  one of the pearls of that region Bohinj lake where you can make a rest. For centuries Bohinj was the most important centre of alpine dairy farming in Slovenia. In the small village of Stara Fužina get a scence of the lives of herdsmen and dairymen at the Museum of Alpine Dairy Farming. To feel the beat of past time of Bohinj valley continue your journey to Oplen’s, a Bohinj farmhouse; a longhouse, uniting dwelling and farm rooms together in the same builiding. The locals  there can demonstrate you how butter was made in the past. In the late afternoon drive past small russian chapel built by russian soldiers in 1916, over the highest slovenian pass Vršič offers fascinating views of the mountains and charming scenery that will defenitely touch you. Between the mountains and emerald waters lies The Bovec area (Bovško), where conclude the first day of your journey. Dinner and sleeping.

»Tasting« the Primorska region

Slovenian wine

After breakfast  head toward Kobarid and visit The Kobarid Museum of WW1. The Kobarid Museum was founded in 1990 with the aim of presenting the rich history of Kobarid, particularly the events on the Soča Front from May 1915 to November 1917. In Strasbourg the museum recived the Council of Europe Museum Award for 1993.

If weather  is clear drive towards the outlook tower in Gonjači in the beautiful wine-growing region Goriška Brda. In the pleasant Mediterranean clime hard working people provide for hundreds of sunny fruits – cherries, peaches, apricots, olives, figs, chestnuts and grapes of course, which at St. Martins day matures into wine. After lunch at Goriška Brda take a guided tour of the wine cellery in Dobrovo, which concludes with the tasting of some of the best Slovenian wines of that region.

End your journey with a visit of two picturesque Carst settlements Štanjel and Kobdilj. Returning to Ljubljana in the late evening.
